The summer is well underway, and it is still a great time to get out and see some of the local scenery. The USDA Forest Service website has a list of trails complete with maps, distances, usage, and summaries. There are about 45 trails, with over 300 total miles to trek.

Spring Cave (South Fork) May Close To Protect Bats

While none of the caves in the Rocky Mountain Region have known cases of white-nose syndrome (WNS), bats in the eastern US are dying from it. To prevent the spread of this disease, which could be caused by cavers and their equipment, the Forest Service recommends that you de-contaminate your equipment and clothing before caving and report unusual bat behavior. Geocaching is a relatively new idea, starting at the beginning of this century. It is a new way to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends. Using a simple GPS receiver, the goal is to find hidden treasure caches. There are about 7 caches within a couple of miles from town, and there are many more up the White River, down Piceance Creek, and around other beautiful areas around Meeker.

The Old Elementary School

The Meeker Chamber has shared some information regarding usage of the former elementary school. It includes a presentation from a DU student, the plan is fairly detailed and full of good options. I’d be excited to see this plan taken seriously. Now the only question in my mind is do I like the idea of the fountain or the amphitheater? Ideas anyone?

Flat Tops Scenic Byway

One of the joys of living in Meeker, is the beautiful landscape. We are situated at the foothills of the Flat Tops Wilderness, which have a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities. The Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway website, has videos and pictures to give you a taste of what the area is like, and information regarding the historic trail reaching back to the Ute War of 1887.

MHS Drama Club Event | Little Shop of Horrors

Meeker High School (MHS) Drama Club and International Thespian Society Troupe 1284 present the musical comedy, Little Shop of Horrors. Little Shop of Horrors is a hilarious rock musical by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Many will recognize these two men for their work on Oscar winning scores from the likes of Beauty and the Beast. Catch a sample of the song “Suddenly, Seymour”. The event will take place at the MHS Auditorium. Tickets are $10.00 for adults, and $5.00 for children/students/seniors. The opening will be on Friday, April 16^th, at 7:00 PM, with a show on the following night at 7:00 PM and a matinee on Sunday the 18^th at 2:00 PM. For more information call 970-878-9070.
